Poggio di Sotto

Founded in 1989, Poggio di Sotto has already become one of the most respected names in Brunello di Montalcino, with a history of 100-point scores and described by Decanter Magazine as ‘the quintessential Brunello’.

The estate is dedicated to the perfection of a single grape variety: Sangiovese. Remarkably, every grape that goes through the winery is grown to Brunello di Montalcino standard and regulations – even those which go into their excellent Rosso di Montalcino. They’re so focussed on Sangiovese that in 2012 they began a census of 182 distinct clones found in the estate’s rows, which are now studied, catalogued, and included in a genetic conservation program for the planting of new plots. The vineyards rise from 190 to 440 metres altitude up the slopes of the extinct volcano, Mount Amiata, which offers both protection from the sea’s unstable weather as well as cool night winds, warm daytime updrafts and a geological mosaic of distinct soil types. Though the winery’s story begins in 1989, the vineyards date back to beyond the 1970s, with many of the vines over 50 years old.

Whilst all the wine produced is initially designated as Brunello di Montalcino in the vineyard, extensive tasting of all tanks and barrels determines which parcels become Rosso, Brunello, or Brunello di Montalcino Riserva.

It’s an approach that guarantees extraordinary quality at all tiers – one that has led to Poggio di Sotto emerging as one of the DOCG’s leading producers, with a back-catalogue of exceptional to perfect scores, and acclaim from the world’s most respected critics and palates.

In 2011 Poggio di Sotto became part of the ColleMassari Wine Estates, leading to an expansion of the vineyards and a modernisation of the cellar, laser-focussed on further increasing the quality of their already exceptional Sangiovese wines.
