Founded in 1897 in the heart of Argentina’s most famous wine region, Mendoza, Bodega Lagarde is not only one of Argentina’s oldest wineries, but steward to some of its oldest vineyards.

It was acquired by the Pescarmona family in 1897, and today is run by third-generation sisters Sofía and Lucila, with a focus on making premium Argentinian wines which speak to their grapes and terroirs – but in the most sustainable way possible. ‘We don’t want to be the best in the world – we want to be the best for the world’, Sofía tells us. Their vineyards span some of the most exciting, exclusive and sought-after terroirs in the Mendoza region and beyond. From Chardonnay from Gualtallary, at high altitude in the Andes mountains, to century-old vines that pre-date phylloxera in Argentina. Family is central to the winery and even features in its bottlings; ‘Teia’, their blend of Malbec and Petit Verdot, is named for Sofía’s young son’s pronunciation of ‘estrellas’, meaning ‘stars’, whilst Proyecto Hermanas celebrates both the differences the co-operation and love between the two sisters, Sofía and Lucila.

Alongside their wines, the sisters run a superb pair of restaurants at Bodega Lagarde, inspired by both the tradition and innovation of Argentinian cuisine, one of which already has a Michelin star as well as a Green Star for sustainability.
