Since 1987 the Dalrymple vineyards in Tasmania, has crafted some of Australia’s most distinctive cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
Nestled in a cocoon of mixed vegetation and rolling hills, Dalrymple enjoys a unique and seductive aspect shared by only a few boutique vineyards scattered across Tasmania’s Pipers River region. The vineyard’s easterly aspect, which overlooks the Bass Strait – the wild sea which separates Tasmania from the mainland – combined with the site’s red basalt soils and cool sea breezes, all combine to create a perfect equilibrium for growing premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
First discovered by Dr Bertel Sundstrup in 1987, after a long search for ‘the perfect site’, this small, mature family-owned vineyard produces some of Australia’s most distinctive cool climate wines. In December 2007, the vineyard was acquired by the Hill-Smith family. With the site already planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, proprietor Robert Hill-Smith invested in replanting with clonal material from the Yalumba Nursery to ensure the vineyard continues to produce some of Australia’s finest cool climate expressions of both varieties.
Today the wines are crafted by winemaker Peter Caldwell, whose approach focuses on purity, balance and a strong sense of place. Working closely with the distinctive cool climate conditions of Tasmania’s Pipers River, Caldwell aims to highlight the elegance and vibrancy that define Dalrymple’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, building on the vineyard’s long reputation for producing refined and expressive wines.
