The ultimate wine alternative
Sparkling tea might seem an unusual addition to the portfolio of a wine distributor, but when we came across Copenhagen Sparkling Tea we simply couldn’t stop thinking about how … well … winelike it was.
Tea already shares many of wine’s sensibilities. Just as (almost) all wine comes from the Vitis Vinifera grape, so all true tea is a product of one plant: Camellia Sinensis. But the swathe of flavours that can be conjured from the terroir of the tea plant, the way it is grown, the point at which its leaves are harvested and the way they are then processed is bewildering.
Just as wine connoisseurs have favoured appellations, so tea lovers might compare the green teas of various regions of China or Japan, the elegant black teas of Darjeeling (often called ‘the champagne of teas’) or the high mountain oolongs of Taiwan.
So perhaps it’s no wonder that, whilst the flavours might be very different, there’s something in the DNA of the drink that always brought us back to that winelike thread.
After all, it’s a drink conceived by an award-winning sommelier with access to thousands of bottles of wine. Blended by someone with a world-class wine palate to appeal to known wine drinkers and wine lovers. And created with the specific intention of food-pairing, in exactly the same way you might a wine.
Whilst there are now some excellent zero-alcohol wines available (look no further than those made by our friends at Familia Torres and Miguel Torres Chile), Copenhagen Sparkling Tea nestles perfectly in our stable of premium family-owned wines. A drink of provenance, care and considered blending, made by wine lovers, perfect for anyone who wants a fine glass of fizz – and with no (or very little) alcohol.
