Southern Pioneers
Not content with merely exploring the hundreds of terroirs and vineyards they work with in Burgundy, in the 1970s the Latours took the then-unprecedented decision to plant Chardonnay vines in the southerly Ardéche and Pinot Noir in nearby Valmoissine. (Eléonore jokes that her grandfather insisted any new region had to be within driving distance of Burgundy by lunchtime!)
It was an eyebrow-raising decision at the time, with many of their peers telling them it couldn’t be done, but the Latours persevered, and Grand Ardéche Chardonnay and Valmoissine Pinot Noir were not only born, but became Maison Louis Latour staples, adverts for the potential of southern French Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and wines that comfortably sit beside outstanding Burgundy – at sensational value.
