Runrig

The wine that started it all; both a nod to the classic Syrah-Viognier blends of the Northern Rhône and a love song to the Barossa. RunRig draws on six particular old-vine Shiraz vineyards, some of their vines over 170 years old. Each parcel is vinified separately and aged in French oak before assemblage, with a small proportion of Viognier added for softness and aromatic lift.

This wine is Torbreck’s origin story. The very first wine they made, a dazzling review of their second vintage, 1996, from the Wine Advocate, placed Torbreck firmly on the fine wine map, a position it has occupied ever since. (The Wine Advocate re-reviewed RunRig 1996 in 2025 and awarded it 98 points, remarking on its astonishing freshness).

Though numerous vintages of RunRig have come and gone in the 30 years since its conception, the philosophy has remained the same: old vine Shiraz picked at full physiological ripeness, hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented separately in traditional open-top fermenters before 30 months in oak. The coming together of ancient vines, Rhône varieties and distinct Barossa terroirs; the essence of Torbreck in a bottle.
