Iconic Côtes-du-Rhône
Whilst the Northern Rhône Guigal wines such as the La Las, along with the standout Condrieus, ‘Ex-Voto’ Hermitages and Vignes de l’Hospice Saint-Joseph might be some of the most legendary names in fine wine, Philippe emphasises that the hardest to make is actually their iconic, staggeringly good-value Côtes-du-Rhône.
A blend from growers across the region, Philippe and Marcel taste fifty wines a day, every day, for this wine alone – of which 1.5% of the samples make the grade. He describes it as far harder to put together than any of the La Las – but the result is a Côtes-du-Rhône considered by many to be the benchmark for the style, and arguably one of the best value wines, given its quality, made anywhere in France.
