A singular vision

Around 2001 or 2002, when it became clear that the vineyard was presenting two very distinct expressions, Mike and his team put aside the idea of ‘the single wine’, in favour of the Series M and Series C that seemed to be inherently suggesting themselves. But the idea was never killed, and from 2019 Mike set his team a task.

Every vintage they tried to create a single barrel comprising the essence of the whole vineyard. Never sold, never shared; purely for experimental purposes, and to draw on the deep insights into the vines and ground that they’d gleaned over 20 harvests.

In the 2025 vintage they cracked it. Tasting the blend in December, Mike decided that, after decades of imagining, discussing, blending and experimenting, they had finally arrived at the illusive, dreamed-of blend.

From the 2025 vintage – to be released around 2028, the Series M and Series C will be retired, and the long-held ambitions of The Vilafonté will be realised. Bringing together the best of the softer, rounder Malbec and Merlot with the structure, depth, poise and tension of the Cabernets, all singing together in the harmony of the Vilafonté terroir that nurture them, it will be the missing piece in that 30 year investigation into the world’s oldest soils and their potential for truly extraordinary wines.
