Sustainability pioneers

Even in New Zealand, arguably the world leader when it comes to sustainability in winemaking, Seifried sits at the forefront. One of the original members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand since the programme was first established in the mid-1990s, all 10 of their vineyards are fully Sustainability Accredited, and everything Seifried produces is 100% sustainable – audited every three years as such.

This covers every area of their operations, from the vineyards to the final labels. Whether it’s lightweight tractors to reduce soil compaction, and employing sheep to manage weeds and grass between vineyard rows (something they’ve done since the 1990s – long before it became wider spread), to committing to lightweight bottles with 74% recycled glass and a minimal-waste recycling programme. They’ve even built a ‘fish passage’ and ‘fish ramps’ through their vineyards to allow local species to repopulate creeks and waterways adjacent to their vines, and recycle waste glass onsite using a glass crusher, turning it into powder that can be used to fill potholes.
