Aotea

These wines are the pinnacle of the Seifried collection – flag-bearers for Nelson, and indeed for New Zealand wine in general. All made from single vineyard, estate-grown Nelson fruit, reflecting the very best of their given vintage.

The name derives from ‘Aotearoa’ – the Maori name for New Zealand itself, meaning ‘land of the long white cloud’ – underscoring that these wines represent, to the Seifrieds, the ultimate expression of the place in which they grow and make their wine.

Vineyards vary according to variety, with an emphasis on showcasing the best terroir for each grape. Fruit is gently pressed immediately after harvest with cool fermentations and gentle winemaking deployed to maximise varietal purity. For wines in which oak is used – such as the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc – French barriques are gravity-filled, whilst the Sauvignon Blanc remains in stainless steel for the cleanest, freshest expression of fruit.

Following fermentation and maturation, only the best parcels are selected for Aotea wines, invariably made in extremely small batches as the definitive Seifrieds – masterclasses in texture, depth and finesse.
