Rhône inspiration
Of the ancient vines with which the Barossa is blessed, an enormous percentage are the classic Rhône Valley grape varieties: Shiraz (Syrah), Grenache and Mataro (Mourvédre). Grapes that are adapted to the high temperatures that many of Barossa’s microclimates can reach, and produce wines which marry depth and concentration with elegance, aromatics and freshness.
Whilst many of Torbreck’s wines bring these grapes together in classic South Rhône ‘GSM’ blends, the winery is especially curious to capture the expressions of individual varieties from distinct terroirs. Whether that be the wild, rugged character of Mataro from the single vineyard quarry that produces ‘The Pict’, the dry grown bush vine Grenache of Hillside Vineyard or the extraordinary power and complexity of The Laird.
