Graham’s 50-Year-Old Aged Tawny produces a golden glow
Graham’s Aged Tawnies are an homage to the craftsmanship and time-honoured skills to the arts of cooperage, ageing and blending that go into producing each bottle.
A perfect example of this is the recently released Graham’s 50-Year-Old which is an eloquent testimony to the unparalleled craftsmanship and dedication that goes into nurturing the Graham’s Aged Tawnies.
Carefully watched over by two generations of Master Blenders, Peter and Charles Symington, the blend is comprised of the ‘CAS Reserve’, a wine from 1969 set aside by Peter Symington to mark the birth of his son Charles, from whose initials the name is derived. It also contains a blend of wines from 1970 and 1973.
Since it was blended in 1982, over 50% of the wine has evaporated resulting in an astonishing level of concentration. As a result, the wine has a captivating deep orange-brown hue with a dark walnut base and a pale green rim. On the nose it has complex layers of aromas of orange blossom, fruitcake, toffee, tobacco and butterscotch. It also offers a deeply sensory experience with notes of seasoned wood, nutmeg and cinnamon on a lingering, pleasurable finish.
The wine has already received widespread acclaim amongst wine critics with James Suckling awarding the wine 98/100 pts and Jancis Robinson (Richard Hemming MW) awarding it an impressive 18 points out of 20.
Partnered with this release is the new Graham’s 40-Year-Old Tawny. Not only is this wine being re-released in a sophisticated new design with a stunning gift box featuring the flora and fauna of Portugal, but the new blend is based on the 1982 colheita, which received an exceptional 19pts from Jancis Robinson. The 40-Year-Old is a witness to immemorial tradition, golden amber with a pale green tinge of age noticeable at the rim. The wine is complex, powerful and reveals an array of delicate fruit, raisins, toasted coffee and chocolate on the palate.
