Ataíde secures Green Wine Company of the Year Award
Wednesday 27 November saw Symington winery, Adega do Ataíde, taking the Green Wine Company of the Year Award at the Drinks Business Green Awards 2024.
The recently completed winery is LEED Certified, an acronym that stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It has achieved ‘Gold’ rating, which as one of judges said ‘’puts it among just a handful of buildings” in the world. “It is a huge achievement”, said another judge, commenting that such an approach “should be inspire others. This is the type of project other wineries should look to”. With a glass light-weighting programme and an investment in photovoltaic panels, the estate has also made a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, making its 100% organic vineyards the source of low-impact wines for the world.
The award reaffirms the Symington’s credentials as one of the world’s most ethical wine producers and is a clear indication of their commitment to the environment and a more sustainable future.
The new winery is part of a long-term road map with a number of goals that the Symington family have set themselves. They include a commitment to renewable energy, a reduction in carbon emissions, greater energy efficiency, greater water efficiency, improving biodiversity and creating sustainable communities.
Symington Family Estates, who an accredited B Corp, are widely recognised as the world’s leading producers of premium quality Port and the largest vineyard owners in the Douro valley – a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. The family’s vineyards are managed under a ‘minimum intervention’ policy that preserves the natural environment, and 112 hectares are organically farmed, making them the largest area of certified organic vineyard in Portugal.
