Antipodean Fizz
Traditional sparkling winemaking techniques combined with Tasmania’s and New Zealand’s cool climate and plentiful sunshine produce impressively high-quality sparkling wine. Balanced, well-structured wines can be found across a wide range of styles from this season’s featured producers.
Jansz Tasmania
Nautilus Estate Jansz Tasmania comes from a cool little corner of the country, colloquially known as ‘Sparkling Tasmania’. The Jansz Tasmania vineyard, which is now owned by the Hill-Smith family, sits to the north-east of the island state within the Pipers River region of the Tamar Valley.
Temperatures here are moderated by its close proximity to Bass Strait. The ocean breezes keep the temperature up during Winter – minimising risk of frost – and down in Summer, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop intense, delicate and refined flavours. Resting on a bed of pure, red, free-draining basalt soil, the Jansz vineyard is truly the perfect site to grow grapes for world-class sparkling wines.
Cuvée NV
Coupling Old World inspiration with New World innovation, Jansz Tasmania crafts this wine from vineyards throughout Tasmania, all of which produce high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Component wines are kept separate during winemaking to maximise blending options and the complexity of the final wine.
Cuvée Rosé NV
Crafted from the finest blocks of Pinot Noir in Jansz estate vineyard at Pipers River, this is a wine of pure indulgence for both their winemaker and the astute wine drinker. Rare, lauded and made from 100% Tasmanian Pinot Noir, the Vintage Rose is a complex, elegant and delightful wine.
Vintage Cuvée 2017
Intense aromas of citrus zest, lemon curd and sea spray are overlaid with complex notes of sweet brioche, toast and nougat. The palate is elegantly structured with preserved lemon, white peach, wild strawberries and rose water. Four years of ageing on yeast lees in bottle has built further complexity and subtle nuances of nougat and roasted hazelnuts.
Vintage Rosé 2017
Pale, blush pink in colour with notes of fresh raspberries, rose petals, baked brioche, and rose water. The elegant structure is in perfect balance with the subtle creamy texture and richness of the mid-palate. Fine tannins derived from maturation in aged oak barrels complement the creamy texture and natural acidity which extends to a lingering, refreshing finish.
Nautilus Estate
Established in 1985 by the Hill-Smith Family, Nautilus Estate is a small family-owned winery nestled in the cool and diverse valleys of Marlborough New Zealand. It is committed to crafting wines that are textural, age-worthy and food friendly, respecting and showcasing the unique Marlborough terroir.
Three vineyard sites are managed to produce fruit for Nautilus Cuvee, which deliver a range of flavour influences. All grapes are handpicked and whole bunch pressed with only the finest free run juice reserved. The individual base wines are then fermented with a selected champagne yeast and left of lees until undergoing a full malolactic fermentation in the traditional Champenoise style.
