6 generations of family ownership
The Hill-Smith family are the proud owners of Yalumba – Australia’s oldest family-owned winery.
Yalumba was founded in 1849 when Samuel Smith left England and set sail for a small town called Angaston in South Australia where he planted his first vineyard, thus establishing the roots of what would later become Hill-Smith Family Estates.
Over the 175 years since then, the Hill-Smith Family have planted vineyards and crafted quality wines across six generations, each generation retaining the pioneering and innovative spirit of its founder.
Today they are a global wine company which is fully integrated through its vine cultivation, wine growing, wine making and international distribution, with a rich and diverse portfolio of leading fine wine brands that includes Yalumba, Jansz Tasmania, Dalrymple Vineyards, Pewsey Vale Vineyard, Heggies Vineyard, Nautilus Estate and Oxford Landing.
It’s current owner, 6th sixth generation member, Robert Hill-Smith, led Yalumba into the modern era by cementing its reputation as an internationally-focused and innovative business within the Australian wine industry. He pioneered Viognier in Australia, established Australia’s First Families of Wine and launched Yalumba’s most prestigious wine — The Caley Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz, honouring his great uncle Fred Caley Smith. Robert’s family carries on the legacy that was first established by Samuel Smith, continuing to experiment and showcase the best the Barossa has to offer.
