We welcome Grattamacco and Poggio di Sotto

It’s always a thrill when a new winery joins the Portfolio.

It’s the result of months – sometimes years – of searching, tasting, talking, deliberating.

Seeking out premium, family-owned wineries who fit with our values and who – most importantly – make wines we think our customers will love.

But sometimes an opportunity arises that’s just impossible to turn down.

Which leads us to introducing our two new Italian friends. Though – as you’ve probably seen, they don’t need much introduction.

Grattamacco – the game-changing Bolgheri revolutionaries

Grattamacco is quite simply one of the most important wineries in Italy’s modern history.

The second of the Super Tuscans, after Sassicaia. One of the wineries who transformed Bolgheri from a wine wilderness into the source of some of the world’s most exciting and sought-after bottles.

Indeed they were the first to proudly adorn their label with the Bolgheri denomination.

Despite a swathe of wine’s finest names now planting in Bolgheri, Grattamacco remain one of its unquestioned elite. ‘When it comes to Bolgheri, Grattamacco still stand apart,’ as The Buyer put it.

Poggio di Sotto – the ‘quintessential Brunello’

We can’t take credit for ‘quintessential’ – that’s how Decanter Magazine described the wines of Poggio di Sotto.

But we couldn’t agree with them more.

From a standing start in 1989, Poggio di Sotto have become one of the most respected names in what is already one of Italy’s hallmark regions.

‘The thing that makes Poggio di Sotto stand out from the pack is its substance,’ to quote Wine Enthusiast.

Another thing that makes them stand out is that, irrespective of the name on the label – whether Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello or Riserva – every wine has been grown in the estate’s vineyard to the same Brunello standard.

It’s only in tasting – during elevage – that they differentiate the wines. Should they wish, ever barrel could legally continue its journey to being a full Brunello di Montalcino.

Except that they only want to put that name on the best. The kind of wines that have consistently been rated 95-100 points by the world’s top critics.

‘Quintessential Brunello’ indeed.

Straight to Portfolio crown jewel status

To welcome one estate of this fame and calibre to the Portfolio would be a delight.

To welcome two is a pinch-ourselves privilege.

We’re delighted to be able to bring these wines to our customers – indeed we can’t wait to share them with you.

It has been a busy time for us in the last few years, with many new friends joining our ranks.

Ensuring that each one fits the Fells values and ethos – that they make wines we consider to be among the very finest in their category – is an exhaustive and time-consuming (if very enjoyable task).

But if the result is wineries of this fame and quality feeling they can put their trust in Fells, it’s worth every minute.
