Seifried’s Sweet Agnes Riesling has been selected in this years Fine Wines of NZ with just 95 wines from across New Zealand having been selected.
Introducing New Zealand’s Most Awarded Dessert Wine
Named in honour of Agnes Seifried, co-founder and matriarch of Seifried Estate in Nelson, comes New Zealand’s most awarded dessert wine.
It was in 1973 when Agnes and her Austrian born husband Hermann planted their first vineyard on the clay loam soils of the Moutere Valley. Growing up in Austria and studying winemaking and viticulture in Germany, Riesling was – and still is today – a variety very close to Hermann’s heart.
Using 100% Riesling, the grapes in ‘Sweet Agnes’ are hand-selected late in the season with a large portion of the fruit shrivelled and raisined caused by natural dehydration. The grapes are then gently pressed to release the intensely concentrated juice. The grapes are picked, pressed, and undergo a very long, slow fermentation.
The Seifried Nelson Winemakers Collection ‘Sweet Agnes’ Riesling is no stranger to the limelight, having now achieved an astounding 17 Trophies, 2 Platinum, and 48 Gold Medals since its inaugural release in 2006.
