Organic approach
Organic viticulture isn’t easy. Either in its practice, or in the many steps involved in gaining certification. But it is core to the Burrier family’s philosophies when it comes to nurturing their treasured vineyards in the most sustainable way possible.
It was Baptiste Burrier’s father, Frederic Marc, who began the process, from the moment he took charge of the family winemaking business in 1999. Step by step he removed all chemical products – pesticides and herbicides – from their viticulture, so that today none are used across all of the Burrier family’s holdings.
Ten years ago, as a way of having their standards officially appraised and proven, and to give themselves additional accountability, they made the move towards official certification. Today 80% of the Burrier’s vineyards are Organically Certified, and the family continues to work towards certifying the remaining 20%.
As Baptiste says, organic viticulture comes with more challenges than those farming conventionally – not to mention a dropoff when it comes to yield. But he believes that the approach reveals its benefits in the flavours they achieve in their wines – whilst at the same time benefitting the vineyards, and ensuring healthy land for the next generations.
