‘’New Zealand’s greatest Cabernet blend’’
Premium New Zealand wine producer, Te Mata Estate, is celebrating after receiving another set of excellent scores for its wines.
Topping the list was Te Mata’s Coleraine 2022, which Erin Larkin was described as ‘’ New Zealand’s greatest Cabernet blend … A ripper’’
Erin attributes part of the success of this great wine, which scored 97+ points, to the care and attention that Te Mata devote to their vineyards. ‘’These older vineyards are looked after to absurd detail. Every 1% pays off, and that is the defining difference between a good estate and a great one’’
Awatea 2022
95/100 points
Also scoring highly was Te Mata Estate’s, Awatea, which Erin described as ‘’A sensational wine … grossly underpriced’’.
‘’This is routinely a superb wine, svelte and supple. The palate is shaped by ductile, ferruginous tannins, which contribute a bloody purity. It’s a sensational wine, grossly underpriced, and it is an absolute pleasure to drink. Do not delay’’.
Alma 2022
95/100 points
‘’Gorgeous wine … delicious’’
Te Mata’s Alma also scored highly, achieving 95/100points. Describing the wine Erin Larkin says ‘’This is a gorgeous wine, totally svelte and structural at once, populated by a saturation of red fruits. There are pomegranate pearls, pink peppercorns, poached strawberry and even a hint of sumac. This is delicious’’.
Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2022
95/100 points
‘’Gorgeous expression’’
In contrast to their award-winning reds, Te Mata also scored highly with their white wines, with Cape Crest scoring 95/100points. ‘’In the mouth, this wine is balanced and harmonious already—this is crucial for us to understand how it could be such a composed wine in the future’’ – Erin Larkin.
Elston Chardonnay 2022
92/100 points
Elston Chardonnay was the second of Te Mata’s whites to be recognised in the tasting, scoring 92/100ponts. Describing the wine, Erin Larkin says ‘’There is a lightness of touch here, which is very attractive. There are white flowers, yellow/cream-colored fruit and pretty orchard inflections (both flowers and fruit) through the finish. There’s a really nice flavour draw across the palate and through the finish’’
