High points for Port

Symington Family Estates were delighted with the scores their Port and Portuguese wines received in the latest Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA).

Most notable amongst their many winners was Graham’s 2018 Quinta dos Malvedos Vintage Port which received the Decanter Best in Show accolade with a score of 97 points.

Other high scoring ports from Graham’s included their 40-Year-Old Tawny which won a Decanter Gold with a score of 96 points and Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage 2019, which also won a Decanter Gold 2025 with a score of 95 points.

Other ports from Symington Family Estates which were recognised, included Cockburn’s 10-Year-Old Tawny which won a Decanter Silver medal with 93 points; Cockburn’s Late Bottled Vintage 2019 which won a Decanter Silver medal with 92 points and Cockburn’s 2014 Quinta dos Canais Vintage Port which won a Decanter Silver medal with 91 points.

Warre’s 2003 Vintage Port ‘Library Release’ also won a Decanter Silver medal with 92 points, and Dow’s 2003 Vintage Port ‘Library Release’ won a Decanter Silver medal with 91 points.

The Symington’s were also pleased to see two of their table wines achieving high scores, most notably Altano Organic Douro DOC Red 2022 which received a Decanter Gold medal with a score of 95 points. Contacto Alvarinho 2024, a wine from the recently formed partnership between Anselmo Mendes & the Symington was also recognised, winning a Decanter Silver medal with 91 points.

Symington Family Estates, who are widely recognised as the world’s leading producers of premium quality Port, are also the largest vineyard owners in the Douro valley, the world’s oldest demarcated wine region and a UNESCO World Heritage site. They own a total of 26 Quintas covering 2,255 ha, of which 1,024 ha are under vine. The remainder is mostly natural Mediterranean scrub with some olive and citrus groves. The family’s vineyards are managed under a ‘minimum intervention’ policy that preserves the natural environment.  In 2020 Symington Family Estates were certified as a B Corporation – a legally binding status that committed the company to a long-term sustainability programme by adhering to rigorous environmental standards.
