Gran Seleziones 2022 of Ricasoli
After 34 generations and nearly 900 years making wine in the same place, you’d expect a family to get to know their land.
That’s longer than any other winery in Italy. But as Sofia Ricasoli explained to a packed crowd attending a Ricasoli Gran Selezione 2022 masterclass at Bentley’s Oyster Bar and Grill, Piccadilly, Ricasoli are really only getting started.
It was a Ricasoli, Bettino, in the late 19th century, who first laid down the ‘recipe’ for Chianti. A little over a century later his great-grandson, Francesco, Sofia’s father, became a visionary for the region’s winemaking culture, delineating the finest terroirs, selecting the best clones of Sangiovese, and driving the introduction of ‘Gran Seleziones’ – Chianti Classico’s highest quality tier.
Guided by Sofia, as well as Maria Bertelli, Ricasoli’s Export Director, and our very own Master Sommelier, Stefan, we tasted through Ricasoli’s Gran Seleziones, all from the same warm vintage, 2022, all vinified the same way, all 100% Sangiovese – but each from a distinct vineyard and soil type.
From the elegant Castello de Brolio, the heart of the Ricasoli stable to the generous Colledia, the distinctive savoury minerality of Roncicone and the beautifully structured CeniPrimo, this was a stunning advertisement for the site sensitivity of the Sangiovese grape – often overlooked, as Stefan observed. The audience was almost perfectly split between the four expressions, but united in their assessment that these are some of the most impressive Chianti Classicos produced in the region today.
900 years of hard work have paid off.
