Cockburn’s wins best design award

On Tuesday 20th May Fells were delighted to receive The Drinks Business Award for ‘Best Redesign’ for their Cockburn’s Port range on behalf of Symington Family Estates.

Winning the redesign category award is not only regarded as a fantastic victory for the port market in general, but it also highlights the strength of the Cockburn’s brand and their use of irreverent and visual storytelling, whilst still respecting the brands long history and cultural heritage.

Cockburn’s has always been regarded as a pioneer within the port category and initiatives such as the new redesign have been instrumental in securing its position as the UK’s leading port brand, as well as attracting new consumers to the category. Today, Cockburn enjoys a record share of the UK port market, selling more than double that of its nearest rival.

Cockburn’s was founded in 1815 in Oporto by Robert Cockburn, a Scottish wine merchant from a distinguished family in Edinburgh. In the 19th Century, three other families joined the company: The Smithes, the Teages and the Cobbs – and together with the Cockburns, they developed this house into one of the greatest names in Port. Their craftsmanship, passion and dedication to producing the best Ports was passed from generation to generation until Cockburn’s Vintage Ports became the most highly-valued Ports of all in the early 20th Century. In 1962 Cockburn’s was sold to Harvey’s of Bristol, which eventually become part of a major international group. In 2010, after an interlude of 48 years, Cockburn’s returned to family ownership when it was purchased by the Symington family. Since then, they have invested in the company’s vineyards, achieving significant improvement in the quality of the wine, thus restoring the reputation that the company had once enjoyed for producing some of the world’s greatest Ports.
