Altesino joins Fells
Monday 3 February saw Fells strengthening its portfolio of world-leading Italian producers with the addition of renowned Brunello producer, Altesino. Founded in the 15th century, the Altesino estate is one Tuscany’s oldest wineries and is still based around the Palazzo Altesi, site of the original winery and cellars.

Throughout its long history the Altesino estate has enjoyed a reputation for excellence and innovation. In 1975 it was the first winery to introduce the “Cru” concept with Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli and in 1979 it was the first to use barriques. In 2002 Altesino was acquired by the Gnudi Angelini family who have developed a close working relationship with the renowned winemaker, Paolo Caciorgna, to create one of the region’s great wine estates. In 2004, the cultural and environmental qualities of the Montalcino region, of which Altesino is an integral part, were recognised when UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.
Brunello – ‘A very fine grape, recognised for its capacity to produce high quality red wines with great ageing potential’
Today, the winery’s approach combines a deep-rooted respect for the region’s traditions with a forward-looking perspective. This approach has produced consistently high-quality wines that have elevated Brunello’s reputation on the world stage.
Welcoming the addition of Altesino to the portfolio, Fells’ Managing Director, Euan Mackay, commented “Altesino is a perfect fit for our portfolio. Family ownership has been at the heart of Fells throughout its long history, so the addition of Altesino – a highly respected, family-owned winery – is a very welcome addition. With a history in winemaking that dates back to the 15th century, they are an acknowledged leader in the production of Brunello wines and were the first winery to introduce the “Cru” concept to the Montalcino region with their Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli”.
