A Torres Priorat masterclass
Tiny, rugged, mountainous, wild … and home to some of the greatest wines in Spain – and indeed the world. That’s Priorat.
Its steep slopes and slatey llicorella soils produce wines of extraordinary elegance and concentration, primarily from the Garnacha and Cariñena grapes.
But compared to its rival fine wine regions, Priorat is tiny. So it’s comparatively rare in the UK – and an absolute joy – to sit down with a flight of Priorat and the chance to really get to know the wines.
Fortunately for us, Familia Torres make some of the finest Priorat of all – at all price points. So we were able to summon a clutch of London’s finest Sommeliers to London’s beautiful Six Senses, and treat them to a series of mini-verticals from the Torres Priorat range – from Secret del Priorat, through Salmos, Perpetual and all the way up to their outstanding single vineyard, Mas de la Rosa.
Our very own Master Sommelier, Stefan Neumann, was on hand to MC along with Torres Brand Ambassador (and Priorat local-boy), Daniel Castro, who talked us through the remarkable and diverse terroirs of the region.
An incredible and instructive tasting that showcased what makes Priorat so special – and gave us a chance to look at the way the wines shift through time, and how important vintage is to these micro-expressions of place.
Many thanks to all who attended. We’ll have to do it again sometime.
