Vasse Felix Triumphs
Margaret River’s founding wine estate, Vasse Felix, has received a series of awards and outstanding scores for its wines.
The Vasse Felix winery was given a 5-star rating by the Halliday Wine Companion, which described it as an ‘Outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity’’.
Congratulations also go to Bart Molony, the Chief Viticulturist behind Vasse Felix’s four specialty vineyards located in selected sites throughout Margaret River, including the region’s oldest vineyard. He was awarded the Halliday Wine Companion Viticulturalist of the Year award.
In addition to these awards, two of Vasse Felix’s wines also achieved outstanding scores.
Tom Cullity 2020
97
Winemaker Virginia Willcock worries that her flagship wines are released too young and, whilst she’s right, anyone buying them knows time will reward the patient. This wine is built for ageing. Malbec, from the original plantings, comprises 16% of the blend whilst 3% petit verdot is also fundamental to the shape and flavour profile. Full bodied with exceptional tannins, all textural, expansive and long, working in tandem with the acidity to a long finish.
Heytesbury Chardonnay 2022
97
Another of Vasse Felix’s wines to score 97 points was its 2022 Heytesbury Chardonnay. If there is one wine typifies the current state of Australian Chardonnay (complex, superfine, detailed and majestic) as much as a wine of place, Heytesbury could possibly be it. There’s a lot of fruit power this.
Two of Vasse Felix’s older vintages also achieved some remarkable scores from the Wine Advocate.
Tom Cullity 2014
97+
Describing the Tom Cullity 2014, Erin Larkin of the Wine Advocate said ‘’Alongside only a handful of other wines, I believe this is one of the very best Cabernets to come out of Margaret River in this brilliant year’’.
She added ‘’This wine is one of the greats, and it has barely scratched the surface in its evolution over time. The tannins are a highlight for me: chewy, chalky, profuse and laced through every aspect of the palate and finish. Super”.
Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
94+
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon leads with blood orange and nori, raspberry pip and freshly turned red earth, eucalypt, iodine and saltbush. In the mouth, the fruit is driven by a cascade of earthy, chewy tannins, and there’s a little uptick through the finish of fresh acidity. I like this wine very much and feel it will age for decades hence. Balance is key to everything, and I like where this sits in the mouth and through the finish. It’s getting better as the years wear on. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
Both wines are available from Fells in extremely limited quantities – please speak to your sales rep for more info.
