Barone Ricasoli releases latest vintages
The newly released wines, which were presented to an audience of sommeliers and fine wine customers by company president and owner, Francesco Ricasoli, and Stefan Neumann MS at the Goring Hotel’s Garden Room, included Ricasoli’s Chianti Classico Gran Selezione (2020) Castello di Brolio, Colledilà, Roncicone and CeniPrimo and Casalferro (2019).
Highly regarded by the leading winewriters, the wines have already achieved some remarkable scores with James Suckling awarding the CeniPrimo 2019 97 points, the Colledilà 2020 97 points, and the Roncicone 2020 95 points.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ceniprimo 2020
Aromas of al dente cherries with citrus peel. Flowers, such as red roses, also come through clearly. Medium to full body, with open grain tannins that caress like cashmere. Chewy, fresh and vivid. Give this three to five years to come together. Try after 2027.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colledilà 2020
Very perfumed with hibiscus flower, citrus and fresh cherry aromas that follow through to a medium body with layers of fruit and very fine tannins that go on and on. Totally integrated. A joy to taste and drink but will improve beautifully in the bottle. All about harmony.
Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate also gave the wines some excellent scores.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio Roncicone 2020
‘This is the wine that blew me away last year (when I tasted the excellent 2019 vintage) and assured me of the innovative work now underway at Barone Ricasoli. Today, tasting the 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio Roncicone, I am reminded of the quality fruit obtained from this special 10-hectare site with marine fossils mixed within its sandy topsoil. Showing brilliant clarity and focus, this carefully oak-aged Sangiovese offers rose, dried cherry, campfire ash and delicate mineral tones. This wine paints a beautiful portrait of this grape. Production is 10,000 bottles.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio 2020
One of the estate’s most important and successful bottles, the Barone Ricasoli 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio is plump and rich with warm-vintage layers of blackberry, juicy cherry, spice and soft earth. It ages in tonneaux for 22 months, of which only 30% is new oak, yet that is more than enough to impart savoury tones, soft tannins and rich textural support to this full-bodied Sangiovese. Production is 33,000 bottles.
